Content delivery and acceleration offloads static content request, such as images, videos and file downloads, from your web servers. These requests are globally load balanced and distributed to specialized edge servers to maximize performance and ensure high-availability.

How it works

The simplest approach is to use a unique subdomain for static content and delegate it to the CDN service. For example, content.yourwebsite.com would be a synonym (or CNAME in DNS terms) for the CDN edge web servers. As a result, a request such as http://content.yourwebsite.com/somemovie.wmv would get handled by a CDN edge server, which in turn would serve the content to user requesting it. The edge server may need to request the content from your origin server in order to cache it for subsequent requests. It is also possible to accelerate the entire web site through a CDN service.
